Why and How to Improve Your Storytelling Skills

2025-06-05

In Bot and I we believe storytellers can make a bigger difference in the world around them. You can use storytelling everywhere: at work, at home with your kids or maybe you're just telling stories to friends and family as a hobby. Either way, if you want to inspire people and change how they see the world or their behavior, you can do a better job if you are equipped with the right tools to compose and tell stories.

If you know how to tell a story people will listen to you more carefully

Storytellers understand the basic principles of writing or telling a story. They take the readers or listeners to a journey using their words, keeping them engaged and interested though the story. Think about a moment when a story you've heard made a real impact on you. If you have something to say, telling a story is a very powerful tool to make others listen.

An interesting example you might not expect to see in this context is companies that are fighting over consumer attention. Many business leaders are telling a story through their company's brand. Nike is a great example, a brand telling a story about dedicated athletes finding their greatness through hard work. Lego is another one, telling a story about makers solving engineering problems to build anything they can imagine. Think of how you feel just hearing the names of these brands!

The stories such companies tell affect business decisions their leaders make. From package and advertisement language and slogans, through the look and feel of online presence and physical stores, to every other detail that comes to mind when you think of the company and its products. Just as with a traditional story, it's more than telling you the dry facts. It's about making you the hero of the story and making you connect emotionally to the brand.

Writing regularly keeps our storytelling muscles fit

When I started writing stories, I had no idea what I was doing. How do you find an interesting topic to write about? What makes the readers keep on reading? How do you create that sense of relief or satisfaction when all the pieces come together? I found that like any other type of exercise, regularly writing stories is the best way to get better. Practice helped me develop a mental model automatically causing me to think how what I'm saying can be more compelling (and I keep learning). Keep writing to get used to applying the basic principles of storytelling: relatable characters confronting and resolving a central conflict. Teach yourself how to trigger the right emotions at the right time, what details you can add to make the story more engaging. Train yourself hard enough and it will start feeling natural and effortless, or at least easier.

How can I start?

Start by writing a short story once per week or so. Set up a dedicated time slot, sit in a quiet and comfortable place and start by writing whatever comes to mind. Use the traditional pen and paper approach or use a computer- whatever is more convenient for you.
